Jeremy Umlauf

Jeremy Umlauf is an emerging composer from the Orlando, Florida area. His music mostly utilizes a traditional tonal harmonic language that is often mixed with subtle polytonality. His music is also often narratively driven and is occasionally inspired by music outside the Classical tradition. A few of his musical heroes include Leoš Janácek, Gustav Mahler, Alfred Schnittke, Koji Kondo, Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra, and Thomas Kalnoky of Streetlight Manifesto. He won first prize in the 2022 National Flute Association’s Flute Choir Call for Scores for his piece Colibri and first prize in the Florida Bandmasters Association’s 2021-2022 Young Composer Competition for his concert band piece Clash of the Ancient Sorcerers. He studied under Dr. Manuel de Murga and Dr. Sydney Hodkinson at Stetson University where he received his BM in Composition, under Dr. Daniel Crozier at Rollins College where he studied as an independent student, and under Dr. Alexander Burtzos at the University of Central Florida where he received his MA in Music. When not composing, Jeremy can be found fishing Florida’s rich fisheries, where he catches snook, tarpon, trout, redfish, largemouth bass, and chain pickerel. His love of fishing helps fuel his inspiration and passion for composition.
